Our Story

From the Beginning

My Father Nick worked most of his professional life as a Naval Architect and later manager, in the defence industry. He worked on the designs of Swiftsure and Trafalgar class submarines, as well as the Invincible class aircraft carrier, but I am pretty sure he always harboured dreams of becoming a boat designer and builder, certainly judging by the number of wooden boats he built at home during our childhood. In 1995, aged 52, he finally quit the “proper job” and started Swallow, designing a range of boats that could be supplied in kit form and built at home by competent amateurs.

The business went well and became respected for elegant, easily driven boats with a classic appearance but built using modern techniques. As a teenager I became interested in all aspects of the business and on leaving university I worked for Dad during a fashionable “year out” before starting my own proper job. 3 years later I knew that designing and building boats was what I wanted to do with my life, and after yet another year out, this time working for the famous yacht designer Tony Castro, Dad welcomed me back where I gradually took over the helm.

That was in 2004…

Growing the business

I rapidly decided that to make better returns, we would need to build complete boats, not just kits. The size of the market for kits in the UK was too small and I was lucky to have gained valuable engineering and design experience, as well as learning first hand from Dad, so began to develop a new boat that I felt had a fighting chance of being popular enough to feed my young family. The SeaRaider appeared in 2006 closely followed by a more cruising oriented boat we called the BayRaider 20. Sales of that boat helped to propel us into taking on permanent staff, and building a new workshop in the field next door. In 2007, just before the financial world started imploding, I got the mortgage agreement signed and work began.

Sailing into the future

The business grew by developing new designs such as the BayCruiser 20 and 23 (our first cabin cruisers) and the BayRaider Expedition. The BayCruiser 26 came out in 2014 along with a new workshop, next to the current, in which to expand. In 2019 a devastating fire meant we lost the original 2007 unit, but rebuilt just in time to be shuttered by Covid. Since then we have introduced a powerboat to our range, with plans for more, and new sailboat – the BayCruiser 21.

Dad died in October 2023, aged 80. I hope and believe his legacy lives on in all we create here.
